A.I. Upskill

Practical AI for work and life

Think. Act. Connect.

Ideas worth building together, at work and in life.

Some of these ideas are about where AI earns its place at work. Others are about how it can help us grow, remember and connect with the people who matter. Pick a channel, find the idea that sparks something, and let's talk.

The AI Wind Tunnel

Can we test intelligence before trusting it?

Push an agent through clean, messy, misleading and impossible cases. Watch where the airflow breaks, change the design, and run it again.

  • Agent evaluation
  • Adversarial testing
  • Tracing
  • Guardrails
ORCHESTRATOR TOWER · FRIDAY 16:40 FLIGHT STRIPS
02Second pick

The Enterprise AI Control Tower

Who coordinates an organisation full of intelligent agents?

Every agent can fly. Safety comes from coordination: priorities, permissions, conflicts and knowing when to call a human.

  • Multi-agent orchestration
  • A2A
  • MCP
  • Identity & permissions
RING · HUMAN JUDGEMENT & GROUND TRUTH PROBLEM · AUTOMATE FINANCIAL RECONCILIATIONS STEP 1/6 Load bank and ledger lines
03Third pick

The Living Rubik's Cube

Can enterprise AI architecture become an interactive experience?

Describe a business problem and watch the cube decompose it. Then move time forward and see capabilities migrate as evidence builds.

  • Architecture generation
  • Structured reasoning
  • Visual storytelling
OVERDUE INVOICE · THREE POSSIBLE FUTURES
04Deepest idea

The Causal Compass

From predicting what happens to discovering what makes a difference.

A model says this customer will probably pay. The better question is whether contacting them changes anything, or makes it worse.

  • Causal inference
  • Uplift modelling
  • Counterfactuals
  • Experiment design
AI GREENHOUSE · SPRING SURVEY FICTIONAL KINGSTON ESTATE AGENCY
05For local SMEs

The AI Greenhouse

What if businesses grew their own intelligence?

Map a business as a greenhouse. See where rules, ML, LLMs or agents would help it grow, and where it isn't ready yet. An hour over coffee, not a transformation programme.

  • Process discovery
  • Opportunity assessment
  • Readiness
  • ROI estimation
DECISION RECORDER · INVOICE APPROVAL #4821 ILLUSTRATIVE RECORD DECISION RECORDER DO NOT ALTER EVERY INPUT, SOURCE, RULE AND APPROVAL, IN ORDER T+00:07.318 REPLAY · EXPLAIN · AUDIT
06Trust & audit

The Decision Flight Recorder

When an AI makes a decision, can we replay exactly why?

A black box for agents. Record every input, source, rule, model call and human approval, then replay any decision step by step for an auditor, a regulator or yourself.

  • Observability
  • Audit trails
  • Explainability
  • Model risk
PATENT SKY · BATTERY TECHNOLOGY ILLUSTRATIVE CLUSTERS
07From my patent work

The Patent Observatory

Where is invention heading, and where is nobody looking yet?

Map a whole technology field from patent text. Crowded constellations show where effort goes, empty sky hints at white space, and every claim links back to its source document.

  • Retrieval & RAG
  • Embeddings
  • Clustering
  • Citation grounding
AUTONOMY LADDER · ACCOUNTS PAYABLE AGENT
08Earning trust

The Apprentice Ladder

How much autonomy should an AI agent earn, and how does it lose it?

Treat an agent like a new apprentice. It starts by watching, climbs only when the evidence says so, and steps back down when its performance drifts.

  • Human in the loop
  • Drift monitoring
  • Governance
  • Progressive autonomy

Life

AI for action, and the things that matter most. Talk to AI on the way to doing something, and to the people you love.

Start here · The pocket habit

Ten seconds to talk. Ten minutes to act. The rest is with people.

  1. Put it on your home screen. Install an AI assistant on your phone, where your thumb already goes.
  2. Talk, don't type. Use the microphone. It's quicker and more honest, and it works while you're walking, waiting or worrying.
  3. Ask for one small action, not advice.
  4. Do it, ideally with someone. Then notice what changed.

"I'm feeling ___. I've got ___ coming up. What's one small thing I can do in the next ten minutes?"

  • "I'm nervous, I've got an interview at two. What's one thing I can do right now?"
  • "I snapped at my son this morning. Help me say sorry in two sentences."
  • "I've meant to call my dad for weeks. Give me three easy ways to start."

AI is a helper, not a counsellor. If things feel heavier than everyday stress, talk to a person: in the UK, Samaritans is free on 116 123, day or night. And check whether your app keeps your conversations.

THE LOOP · AI ON THE WAY TO PEOPLE
THE CONNECTION PYRAMID HOW MUCH

The connection pyramid

Build your week from the bottom up.

Like a food pyramid, most of your nourishment should come from the base: time face to face with people. Shared activities, calls and online communities all have their place. Talking with AI sits at the top. It's rich and genuinely useful in small amounts, but it isn't a meal.

Unlike sugar, the top of this pyramid can lead you back to the bottom. Use AI to find the words, the time or the courage, then go and spend them on people.

A quick check: this week, did the base get most of your time?

This is a guide, not a rule. For people who are housebound, far from family or finding their feet, calls and online communities can be a lifeline, and the right balance looks different.

Can AI help people connect without betraying their confidences?

Two personal agents, one mediator, strict boundaries. The mediator finds a next step both people want without revealing what either asked to keep private.

  • Privacy-preserving agents
  • Consent design
  • Inference risk
  • Negotiation
INNER WEATHER · WEEK 45 FROM 7 JOURNAL ENTRIES
02Understand

The Inner Weather Station

Can noticing your own patterns help you look after yourself?

Short journal entries become a gentle weekly forecast of energy, calm and connection. It points out patterns but never prescribes, and you stay in charge of what it keeps.

  • Pattern finding
  • Privacy by design
CURIOSITY MAP · AUTUMN
03Understand

The Curiosity Map

What would you learn next if someone mapped your curiosity?

A personal learning atlas. It remembers what you've explored, notices what lights you up, and suggests the next trail into country you haven't mapped yet.

  • Lifelong learning
  • AI tutoring
  • Personal knowledge
KITCHEN TABLE COUNCIL AI ADVISERS · ILLUSTRATIVE
04Decide

The Kitchen Table Council

What if you could talk a big decision through with several wise voices at once?

A panel of AI advisers, each with a different temperament, helps you see a decision from every side. They ask the questions. You keep the final word.

  • Reflection
  • Decision making
  • Perspective
  • Multi-agent dialogue
REHEARSAL ROOM · A HARD CONVERSATION
05Act

The Rehearsal Room

What if you could practise the conversation that matters before you have it?

  • Courage
  • Communication
  • Role-play
  • Empathy
PROMISE KEEPER · WEEK 45
06Act

The Promise Keeper

How do good intentions become things you actually do for people?

  • Legacy
GOOD NEIGHBOUR EXCHANGE · ONE NEIGHBOURHOOD, THIS WEEK
08Connect

The Good Neighbour Exchange

Could AI help a neighbourhood look after itself?

Neighbours post what they need and what they can offer. A privacy-first exchange, built like Common Ground, suggests matches and shares nothing until both people say yes. The point is the knock on the door.

  • Community
  • Matching
  • Privacy by design
  • Local action
